What Is Bone Grafting?

Your jawbone's strength is very important to your overall oral health. With a weakened jawbone from physical trauma or missing teeth, you may require bone grafting so the jaw can securely hold both your natural teeth and dental implants. Bone grafting, also known as osseous surgery, helps to strengthen and rebuild your jawbone until it's healthy enough to support an implant. At Dali Dental, osseous surgery is performed to strengthen your jawbone for subsequent dental implant surgery to replace missing or weak teeth. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Dao Pham at his office in Plano, TX to learn more about bone grafting.

How Is Bone Grafting Performed?

The exact process of bone grafting surgery will depend on where the graft comes from and the amount of grafting being done. The donor bone may be removed from one area of your body, such as the shin, hip, or chin — this is called an autograft. An autograft may be done in our office using sedation and local anesthesia or in a surgical facility under general anesthesia. Additional graft sources include bone harvested from another person (allograft), bone taken from an animal (xenograft), and a synthetic bone graft (alloplast). At your consultation, Dr. Pham will explain your options for bone grafts and help you decide on the best method for your needs.

As soon as the graft is ready to be placed, Dr. Pham will numb the needed areas and place an incision in the gums to reveal the bone. The prepared graft will be affixed to your jawbone with collagen and proteins that encourage bone growth. The incision will be stitched closed and the area will be cleaned.
